Were ancient Greek philosophers right about reality being only an illusion? What was really the biggest blunder of Einstein’s life? Is everything we’ve been taught about the universe incorrect? In The Unobservable Universe, visionary scientist and engineer Scott M. Tyson successfully unravels cosmology from the level of rocket science and brings it down to Earth, demystifying the universe in terms that laymen can comprehend and enjoy, splitting atoms but not hairs on this magical mystery tour of the outback of time and space.
Tapping nearly three millennia of scientific philosophy and drawing upon his three decades as a prolific researcher, brilliant scientist and inspiring writer, Tyson artfully deconstructs key misunderstandings that modern science inadvertently continues to embrace − unraveling the inconsistencies and paradoxes emerging from contemporary science and science philosophy, dissecting complex principles and debunking long-held premises with illustrative examples to expose vital new insights. His provocative theories, supported with pragmatic anecdotes and symbolic metaphors, translate quantum physics into a master blueprint for all cosmology readers to examine, explore and contemplate.
Tyson effectively illustrates the meaning of perceptions in a way that will prompt scientists to fundamentally rethink preconceived notions and consider new possibilities. He guides readers in a bold, new direction that provides a coherent framework in which they can truly understand the universe and the underlying Theory of Everything. Informative and illuminating, this groundbreaking book’s lively style provides an enlightening and entertaining page-turner, laced with a brilliant combination of compelling theory, solid research, simple analogy, contagious enthusiasm and enough humor to break a smile on the faces of even the most serious cosmologists. Tyson propels readers toward a new state of thinking, with a greater awareness and understanding of the mysteries of the universe that more accurately reflects its truths and realities. As a benchmark for cosmology, The Unobservable Universe will forever change the way we look at our world.

The Unobservable Universe A ParadoxFree Framework for Understanding the Universe 1 Scott Tyson Catherine Rourke Thomas Hill Reviews
Scott Tyson does a great job at explaining the history of physics and how we got to our current theories. Then he goes further and introduces his own new theory - a new way of interpreting the existing experimental data that explains a lot of the apparent paradoxes we have now in current theories. The book is very good even if you haven't read popular physics books much before - because I haven't. But I think even if you've done a lot of other reading you'd enjoy it - it brings history and existing thought together in an interesting way, and his new theories will really make you think! It would probably be a good book for high school and college students who are interested in physics too - because there is an attitude of telling people it's OK to question current theories- it's good - that's how science makes progress. In fact he even says his own "thought experiments" might or might not be on the right track. In general, he's encouraging people not to be afraid to engage in creative thinking - that's how Einstein made his breakthroughs!
The concept of an in unobservable universe isn't new. But the way Tyson explains his version seems to make more sense, in a sense. An observer created universe isnt new either. But the artful way he defines the role of the observer as limited to a finite number and type of observations is novel. This is a solid blow to reduction materialists, which in my opinion is WAY overdue. Clearly, we are in an era that demands alternative explanations that deal with the myriad paradoxes we have yet to resolve. As is becoming more and more evident Observers play a critical role in this universe. Maybe, just maybe Tyson is on to something here in his "creation" of a voidverse in which observation may only interact via the observerse. Occum would be proud! It's so simple yet elegant to think that entanglement may be explained in a way that doesn't make it "spooky at a distance." Now we may finally have a possible way to explain al that dark matter and energy as well. I guess time will tell if Tyson has has hit a home run or is out at first base. I would love ro know what some leading cosmologists / quantum mechanics types have ro say about this.
All in all I enjoyed the book. I did find myself wandering away mentally during the repetitive reviews Tyson weaves into the book but then again we do learn by repetition.
Read it, you won't be disappointed, unless you think we observers already have all the answers.
As I have been reading and studying physics for about 35 years. Reading a another new physics book is hardly considered a novel experience for me. However, in this instance I was stunned at this amazingly interesting new perspective of the universe that we inhabit. This is a genuinely ground-breaking new view of the universe!
You won't find the same old rehashing of the history of physics that we have learned to expect from mew books on this subject that then finally conclude with a brief look at some new proposition or perspective that we might have not previously considered.
This very long and extemely interesting new book is just full of new interesting perspectives about a novel way of understanding the universe! If Scott is correct with his theory, the consequences for physics are seriously ground shaking. This could mean the uncovering of the mystical Theory of Everything actually becoming a reality.
I sincerely request that this material should be read and considered by scientists such as Lee Smolin, Stephen Hawking, Victor Stenger, John Gribbin, Martin Rees and all the others. This is seriously worth thinking about!
The book is written in a manner that is quite acceptable to be read by the public at large. You will not find the author going over your head. He takes the time to explain things in a suitable level of detail and a manner that is readily understandable by most readers. You will not get sunk by heavy mathematics.
The author frequently reminds us of things that we have previously read in the book so that we might apply that thinking in a new area being covered. This might seem a little irritating to some readers at times, but it does the trick in ensuring that you don't miss the point that is being made at the time.
I would love to see the physics community sit up and take notice of the ideas presented in this literature, and try to refute it if they can. This is the first good attempt I have read to eliminate all of the great paradoxes that bedevil physics at this time. If it can stand up to the appropriate levels of scrutiny, perhaps this is a turning point for physics that could be every bit as big as any previous physics revolution that has been encountered in the past!
My congratulations go to the author for presenting me with a new way of looking at physics that has given me real exicitement and just might turn out to be a real turning point in the thinking of great scientists who know so very much than I do about this wonderful subject.
